Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital

The Ekiti State Government has dismissed the surgeon in charge of a controversial surgery at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) following allegations that a patient’s kidney was wrongly removed.

The decision was announced in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, after the government received a detailed report from a seven-man panel of enquiry chaired by Professor Francis Faduyile.

According to the report, the surgeon who had primary responsibility for the operation on Joshua Afolayan has been dismissed with immediate effect. Other members of the surgical team present during the procedure have been suspended for one month, pending further administrative review.

The state government also disclosed that it will fully fund a new kidney transplant for Afolayan and cover his post-transplant care and related medical expenses for two years.

In addition, Ekiti State says it will carry out a comprehensive reorganisation of relevant departments within EKSUTH to strengthen accountability, patient safety, and clinical governance.

While reaffirming its support for diligent health workers in the state, the government warned that it would not hesitate to take firm action where professional standards are breached.

The case gained public attention earlier this month after Afolayan accused doctors at EKSUTH of removing his kidney during surgery. He claimed that medical scans before the operation showed only one kidney was damaged, but later tests revealed he was left without a kidney after

the procedure.
