The Nigeria Police Force, through the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB), Abuja, has recorded two major legal victories in separate court rulings that further strengthen efforts to combat financial crimes and enforce the law.
In one of the judgments delivered by the Federal High Court, Abuja, Justice Emeka Nwite ordered the permanent forfeiture of assets worth more than N2 billion linked to a financial sector employee, Alonge Opeyemi Yetunde, and her associates.
According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, the assets forfeited to the Federal Government include bank accounts, digital wallets, vehicles and landed properties located in Lagos, Osun, Delta states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The ruling was delivered in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/274/2026. The principal suspect is currently being held at the Suleja Correctional Custodial Centre and is facing charges related to fraud and money laundering.
In a separate ruling, the court dismissed a N100 million Fundamental Rights Enforcement Suit filed against the Nigeria Police Force and the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, INTERPOL, by a United States-based suspect, David Imole Averehi.
Justice Bello Kawu, who presided over the matter in Suit No. FCT/HC/CV/4119/45, held that the court could not be used to hinder the lawful responsibilities of law enforcement agencies or shield individuals facing criminal allegations from prosecution.
The judgment cleared the way for the INTERPOL National Central Bureau to continue legal proceedings against Averehi over allegations of obtaining money under false pretences.
Reacting to the rulings, the Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging international policing partnerships and legal mechanisms to combat financial crimes, recover illicit assets and protect the nation’s economic interests.
The Force noted that the judgments represent significant progress in its ongoing efforts to strengthen accountability, uphold the rule of law and ensure that individuals involved in criminal activities are brought to justice.
