A difference in political opinion has emerged within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State following former Governor Ayodele Fayose’s endorsement of Governor Biodun Oyebanji, with the party’s governorship candidate, Dr. Wole Oluyede, publicly distancing himself from the position.
Fayose recently defended his support for Governor Oyebanji and President Bola Tinubu, stating that both leaders deserve commendation for their leadership style, inclusiveness and commitment to governance.
According to the former governor, his support is based on performance rather than political affiliation.
“Oyebanji has carried everyone along. His style of leadership has reduced political tension and promoted inclusiveness. When a leader is doing well, it is only fair to acknowledge it regardless of political differences,” Fayose said.
He also praised President Tinubu for what he described as bold efforts to address Nigeria’s economic and governance challenges, noting that some of the ongoing reforms, though difficult, are necessary for the country’s long-term stability and growth.
Fayose maintained that political leaders should place the public interest above partisan considerations and assess governments based on their achievements rather than party identity.
However, Oluyede disagreed with the former governor’s assessment of the Oyebanji administration.
Speaking during an interactive session with journalists at his residence in Ikere-Ekiti, the PDP governorship candidate acknowledged Fayose’s right to support any candidate but insisted that he holds a different view on the performance of the current administration and the direction of governance in the state.
“I have tremendous respect for Fayose and his right to make political choices. However, I hold a different view regarding the performance of the present administration and the direction the state should be taking,” Oluyede said.
He argued that governance should be evaluated based on the expectations of the people, particularly in critical areas such as security, infrastructure development and public service delivery.
According to him, while endorsements remain personal decisions, the electorate will ultimately determine the outcome of the next governorship election.
“Every stakeholder is entitled to his opinion. What is important is that the people of Ekiti will ultimately determine the direction they want the state to go through their votes,” he stated.
Oluyede expressed confidence that voters would carefully assess the records, policies and programmes of all candidates before making their choice at the polls.
He also called for continued improvements in security and infrastructure across the state, stressing that government performance should always be measured against the needs and aspirations of the people.
Despite their differing views on Governor Oyebanji, both Fayose and Oluyede appeared united in their support for President Tinubu. Oluyede reaffirmed his backing for the President, describing it as a position rooted in conviction, while Fayose maintained that Tinubu’s leadership and reform agenda deserve support.
The development reflects ongoing debates within the PDP over the performance of the Oyebanji administration as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the next governorship election in Ekiti State.
