In a solemn yet inspiring ceremony marked by tributes, prayers, and heartfelt emotions, the Obuo community of Obeagu in Awgu Local Government Area came together to lay to rest one of its finest sons, Ogbuefi Alphonsus Okeke Chime, a man celebrated for his courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to family and community.
Born in 1943 into the Umuokochi family of Obuo Obeagu, Ogbuefi Chime lived a life defined by service, sacrifice, and adaptability. A former Biafran soldier, his early years were shaped by shared family values and the collective struggles of his generation. At the end of the Nigerian Civil War, while many of his peers continued in military service, Ogbuefi Chime charted a different path, venturing into the art of tailoring — a decision that symbolized his ability to rebuild, reinvent, and inspire.
Speaking during the funeral mass at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church Parish, Obeagu, officiated by Rev. Fr. Linus Chukwunweike Okwu, family members, friends, and dignitaries paid glowing tributes to a man whose life story remains an enduring testament to perseverance and peace. The interment followed immediately at his family compound amidst an outpouring of love and solidarity.
Heartfelt Tributes from Family and Friends
In her tribute, Mrs. Chidinmma Chukwu, the first daughter of the deceased, described her father as “a peaceful man who touched lives positively and lived by example.”
Similarly, Miss Ogochukwu Okeke Aniokete urged her siblings to uphold their father’s legacy of harmony, stressing the importance of unity and love within the family.
For Mrs. Ezeugwu Aniokete Chinasa, the deceased’s daughter-in-law, Ogbuefi Chime was “a rare gem whose kindness and simplicity were unmatched,” expressing hope that he finds eternal rest.
In a deeply emotional moment, Chief Mrs. Jenette Aniokete, the widow of the late Ogbuefi, described his passing as “an unfillable vacuum,” while praying for God’s divine mercy upon his soul.
Dr. Aniokete Thomas Chinedu, a nephew of the deceased, reflected on his uncle’s life of strength, discipline, and humility, while Miss Pascaline Onyinye Okeke extended gratitude to sympathizers, especially the leadership and members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Enugu State Chapter, for their support throughout the funeral preparations.
A Legacy That Lives On
Beyond the personal tributes, friends and community members praised Ogbuefi Chime as a symbol of peace, generosity, and resilience. His transformation from a wartime soldier into a devoted family man and respected community figure remains a powerful narrative of survival and adaptation.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Chief Mrs. Jenette Aniokete, eight children — two sons and six daughters — numerous grandchildren, and an extended family who proudly carry forward his legacy.
As Obuo Obeagu bids farewell, the community not only mourns the passing of a hero but also celebrates a life well-lived — one defined by courage, humility, and service to humanity.
