Saudi Aramco has temporarily shut down operations at its Ras Tanura refinery following a fire triggered by debris from an intercepted Iranian drone near the facility.
The incident, confirmed by the Saudi Press Agency, occurred after two drones were intercepted in the vicinity of the refinery. Falling debris from the interception reportedly ignited a limited blaze within the complex.
According to an official source from the energy ministry, the fire was swiftly brought under control by emergency response teams, and the refinery sustained only minor damage.
“The incident resulted in a small fire that was quickly contained. There were no injuries or fatalities recorded. As a precaution, certain operational units were temporarily shut down, but there has been no disruption to the supply of petroleum products to the domestic market,” the statement said.
The Ras Tanura facility, located along Saudi Arabia’s Gulf coast, is one of the largest refining complexes in the Middle East, with a processing capacity of approximately 550,000 barrels per day.
The episode underscores escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and may have implications for global oil markets, where prices have already been on an upward trajectory.
