The Bauchi State APC caucus in the National Assembly has set up a special committee to address matters related to Governor Bala Mohammed’s potential defection to the party.
The decision came after a heated meeting in Abuja, where members expressed differing views on the political implications of the governor joining the APC.
Dabo Ismail, the acting secretary of the caucus, said the committee would outline the caucus’s conditions and expectations if the governor eventually joins the party. The team is also tasked with engaging key stakeholders and representing the caucus in discussions about possible defections from the PDP-led government. “The committee will keep members updated on the progress of discussions,” Ismail added.
While the governor is welcomed into the APC, Ismail stressed that state stakeholders must be involved in the process, describing the committee’s creation as a democratic way to manage differing opinions while maintaining party unity.
However, concerns were raised about the handling of the issue so far. Sama’ila Dahuwa, senator representing Bauchi North and caucus chairman, criticised the national leadership for not consulting the state caucus before taking steps on the matter, calling it “unacceptable” and cautioning against imposing decisions without proper engagement.
The committee includes senior party figures such as a serving minister, former governors, and two senators. The caucus also agreed to formally present its concerns to the party’s national leadership, emphasizing that due process must be observed.
