The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South-West Zone D, has called on the Osun State Government to investigate complaints raised by students of the University of Ilesa over alleged irregular fees and administrative practices.
In a statement on Thursday, NANS coordinator Josiah Adeyemo highlighted concerns about financial demands that students claim are unjustified. One such issue involves a N25,000 fee for entrepreneurial training programmes that the students say has not been provided. Additionally, students are reportedly charged N5,000 per session for access to the university’s online portal, which remains unreliable despite the fees.
“The pattern of financial charges imposed on students raises serious questions about transparency and service delivery within the institution,” Adeyemo said. He added that essential ICT infrastructure, including Wi-Fi, is inadequate and the absence of an active student union contributes to a challenging learning environment.
The student body urged the state government to review the situation and take necessary action to protect students’ welfare and ensure accountability.
UGAMATV noted that the university recently faced controversy following the reported arrest of a UNILESA graduate, Adedoyin Temitope (also known as Matuwo or Aregbe), who protested his exclusion from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilisation list. The arrest by the Nigeria Police drew criticism from the National Association of University Students (NAUS), with the Osun State chairman, Comrade Adeleke Samson, condemning the treatment of the graduate.
The university management, through Registrar Funso Ojo, denied the allegations, stating that reports of the arrest were inaccurate and misleading, as the institution had not yet graduated its first set of students since its 2023 inception.
