Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has emerged champion of the first-ever ECOWAS Court of Justice Moot Court Competition, clinching the top prize of ₦5 million after a stellar performance that showcased legal brilliance and advocacy skills.

The historic competition, held in Niger State, brought together eight leading law faculties from across the region. ABU’s team excelled through intense preliminary rounds and a gripping final, impressing judges with their clarity of argument, courtroom eloquence, and deep legal reasoning.

The University of Jos finished as first runner-up, delivering a strong and articulate performance that earned them a ₦3 million cash prize.

Speaking at the grand finale on Saturday, the President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, Ricardo Gonçalves, commended all participants, describing the quality of advocacy displayed as a strong indicator of a bright future for the legal profession in West Africa.

“From the opening ceremony to today’s spirited final session, this competition has showcased the depth of legal talent within our region,” Gonçalves said.

“Every participant is a winner. The experience, knowledge, and networks gained here will have lasting impact.”

He congratulated ABU for their well-deserved victory and emphasized that the Court is committed to nurturing legal excellence across the region.

In a landmark announcement, Gonçalves revealed that the Moot Court Competition will now become an annual flagship programme, with future editions to include universities from all ECOWAS member states.

“By creating platforms like this, we not only demystify the work of the Court but also plant the seeds of a stronger legal culture anchored in justice, human rights, and regional cooperation,” he added.

The event has been widely praised as a bold step forward for legal education and regional integration in West Africa.
