The Campaign for Democracy (CD) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently implement reforms aimed at addressing the worsening economic hardship across Nigeria. The group warned that continued neglect of the people’s welfare could lead to national instability.
In a statement titled “The June 12 Struggle: A Reflection on Its Legacy and the Value of the Sacrifices Made,” released in Akure on Sunday, CD National President, Reverend Ifeanyi Odili, lamented that the current administration has yet to provide meaningful solutions to the suffering of ordinary Nigerians, even after two years in power.
According to the group, the Tinubu government’s policies have resulted in “unprecedented hunger, hyperinflation, and widespread suffering,” leaving many Nigerians worse off.
“In comparison, the former military regime was more tolerable than the present crop of political leaders, who seem driven by self-interest rather than the public good,” the statement read.
The CD also expressed regret for its past role in advocating for the transition from military to civilian rule, saying the democratic experiment has fallen short of its promise. The group emphasized that unless the government immediately undertakes “drastic, people-oriented reforms,” Nigeria risks facing severe unrest.
“We call on the Federal Government to rectify its mistakes, prioritise citizens’ welfare, and serve the people rather than the privileged few,” the CD stated.
Referencing the legacy of the June 12 democratic struggle, the group urged the administration to reflect on the sacrifices made in pursuit of a better Nigeria and not allow those efforts to be in vain.
