Abia Police Commissioner Seeks Judicial Partnership to Combat Over-Detention and Juvenile Crime Crisis

The Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Danladi Isa, has raised concerns on violent crimes and jurisdictional matters, delay in apportioning overnight cases, which often leads to the over-detention of suspects.

He also pointed out issues concerning juvenile offenders in Abia and the need for Borstal homes in the state.

The CP, who stated this on Tuesday when he led the DC SCID and OC Legal and other top officers on a courtesy visit to Abia State Chief Judge, Justice Lilian Abai, recognized the judiciary as one of the principal partners of the Police in crime fighting.

The Police Commissioner said there was the need for frequently scheduling of juvenile court sittings to promptly attend to cases of defilement and other sexual offenses involving minors.

These measures, he stressed, would ensure quick access to justice, prevent over-detention, protect suspects’ rights, and ensure diligent prosecution of cases.

In her response, the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Lilian Abai, welcomed the delegation and assured the police of her partnership and support.

She promised to address the concerns raised by the Police boss and further solicited cooperation with Area Commanders and DPOs to allow Magistrates access to police cells within their jurisdictions in line with the new criminal justice requirements.

Justice Abai also requested the provision of court duty policemen at the High Court.

The visit was concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to fostering synergy and strengthening collaboration in the fight against crime in the state.
