A young girl’s cry for help has triggered outrage and action after she was allegedly beaten and disfigured by her guardian in Imo State. Favour Nuhu, 13, is now in hospital care following her rescue by the Stand For Humanity Foundation.
According to Chidiebube Okeoma, the foundation’s founder, Favour was secretly enduring abuse at the hands of her guardian, Mrs. Joyce Onyinye, who allegedly used a laptop charger cord to strike her, leading to total vision loss in one eye.
Favour had quietly shared her ordeal with sympathetic neighbors, pleading, “Please don’t tell her, she’ll beat me again.” Their tip-off led to the foundation’s intervention, which then partnered with the police to track her down.
She was quickly enrolled in a free health insurance program and transferred to Owerri’s State University Medical Centre. Doctors confirmed the damage to her right eye is severe.
The guardian, while admitting to flogging the girl, denied causing the eye injury. She was released on administrative bail but remains under police supervision.
Okeoma condemned the abuse, stating, “No child deserves to be dehumanized, regardless of background or circumstance. If you can’t care for a child, return them to their family. Don’t destroy their future.”
He vowed that the foundation would continue to fight for the rights and dignity of children across Nigeria.
