Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District, has initiated legal proceedings against social media influencer Timothy Gabriel, also known as Tuma, over what he described as defamatory and malicious statements directed at him and his wife, Regina Daniels.
The senator made this known in a statement issued by the Ned Nwoko Media Directorate and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday.
According to the statement, Gabriel issued provocative accusations and challenged both the senator and his wife to respond, an invitation that Nwoko said he has now formally accepted through legal means.
“We have taken full notice of the vile, reckless, and malicious statements made by Timothy Gabriel,” the statement reads. “He has repeatedly made defamatory claims targeting my wife, Regina Daniels, and myself, all under the guise of online activism.”
Nwoko emphasized that no one has the right to defame others and then hide behind freedom of speech or activism. He asserted that Gabriel’s actions were intended to provoke and damage reputations and would not go unanswered.
He added that both criminal and civil actions are being pursued, with his legal team preparing to prosecute Gabriel and any collaborators.
“Freedom of speech does not equate to the freedom to lie, defame, or incite hatred. The internet is not a legal loophole,” he said.
Nwoko stressed that defamation is not activism, warning that all those involved will face legal consequences, not online, but in a court of law.
