In a major breakthrough in the fight against crime, Enugu State Police have arrested seven suspected cultists and armed robbers and recovered multiple firearms, including locally made pistols and gun repair tools.
Police spokesperson SP Daniel Ndukwe said in a statement that the arrests were made in targeted operations based on credible intelligence across parts of the state.
On June 21, officers arrested 25-year-old Yusuf John in the 9th Mile area, recovering a cut-to-size double-barreled gun. His arrest followed confessions from three other suspects, Ebube Victor, Kenechukwu Chiegwu, and Tochukwu Kingsley Nwodo, all of whom admitted to being part of the Supreme Vikings Confraternity.
Earlier, on June 17, police also arrested Ugwualor Obumneke, based on leads provided by Onah Uchenna, a suspect linked to cultism and armed robbery. The follow-up led to the seizure of a Beretta-style pistol, three other pistols, gun parts, and tools allegedly used for repairing illegal weapons.
Police say both groups are linked to notorious cult gangs, Supreme Vikings and Black Axe, and used the weapons in several criminal operations.
The state’s police commissioner, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the operatives and emphasized the command’s commitment to stamping out crime. He urged residents to support the police with reliable information and to stay law-abiding and security-conscious.
