Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has warned that the state could experience another wave of suicide bomb attacks during or shortly after the Sallah celebrations.
He revealed that at least five suspected bombers, believed to have been deployed from different Boko Haram camps, recently infiltrated Maiduguri following intensified military operations in and around the area.
According to the governor, the attackers’ objective is to divert the attention of security forces from ongoing offensives targeting insurgent hideouts across the state.
Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Friday, Zulum noted that such incidents are not unusual, particularly during the Ramadan period.
He explained that out of the five bombers who reportedly entered Maiduguri, three have already carried out attacks resulting in casualties, while two are still at large and may strike during the Sallah festivities.
Zulum described the renewed attacks as a reaction to the sustained military pressure on insurgents in areas such as Sambisa Forest and Konduga, adding that the strategy is meant to weaken ongoing air and ground operations.
To reduce potential casualties, the governor said residents have been advised to limit their movements during the festive period, as insurgents often target crowded and vulnerable locations.
While acknowledging the large population of Maiduguri, estimated at several million people, he urged citizens to remain alert and cautious in their daily activities.
He also assured that security agencies are actively working to track and intercept the remaining suspects before any further attacks occur.
