Nollywood actor Kunle Remi has clarified that his recent comment comparing the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards to the Academy Awards was not meant to be taken seriously, following widespread reactions online.
The discussion started after Remi shared a clip from the 2026 Oscars, showing Michael B. Jordan getting his award engraved shortly after winning. In his initial remark, he suggested that AMVCA winners do not receive their plaques immediately—an assertion that quickly sparked conversations across various media platforms.
In a subsequent video, however, the actor dismissed his earlier statement as playful banter, explaining that it was never intended as a factual comparison. He noted that many people misunderstood the comment and took it too seriously.
Remi reaffirmed his admiration for the AMVCA, describing it as the only African award ceremony that can be likened to the Oscars. He also revealed that he remains actively involved with the event and will be attending this year’s edition.
According to him, he is not just a guest but is also working with the organisers on the upcoming ceremony.
The clarification has also drawn attention to how the AMVCA manages its award process. Winners are presented with their plaques on stage immediately after being announced and are then guided to a media area where engraving is done on the spot.
This process is completed the same night, allowing winners to personalise their awards while participating in interviews, photo sessions, and other media activities. Industry insiders confirm that this system has been consistently used in previous editions, with visual records supporting the practice.
The development comes amid growing discussions about production quality and global standards, as African film and television continue to gain increased international recognition.
