Youth, Students Dominate INEC’s Ongoing Voter Registration Exercise

Commission reports 509,929 completed registrations as FCT ward-level exercise set to begin

 

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has provided an update on the ongoing nationwide voter registration exercise, revealing that more than 4.4 million Nigerians have completed online pre-registration in just four weeks.

 

According to a statement signed by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information & Voter Education Committee, a total of 4,445,505 Nigerians had pre-registered online as of Sunday, 14 September 2025, since the commencement of the exercise on 18 August 2025.

 

INEC’s data shows that 2,141,294 (48.17%) of the pre-registrants are male, while 2,304,211 (51.83%) are female.

By age and occupation, 2,924,643 (65.79%) fall within the 18–34 age bracket, and 1,112,344 (25.02%) are students.

 

On the combined figure of completed registrations, covering both the online pre-registration and physical (in-person) registration, INEC disclosed that as of Friday, 12 September 2025, a total of 509,929 registrations have been completed. Of this number, 229,758 (45.06%) are male, while 280,171 (54.94%) are female.

Young people aged 18–34 account for 378,132 (74.15%), with 196,529 (38.54%) identified as students.

 

The Commission said detailed breakdowns by state, gender, age, occupation, and disability status have been published on its website and other official platforms for public access.

 

Providing an update on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), INEC reiterated that the online pre-registration there will close on Monday, 15 September 2025. For the next two weeks, physical (in-person) registration will be conducted at designated venues.

 

INEC added that it will devolve registration to all 62 wards in the FCT from 29 September to 8 October 2025, with the detailed addresses of the centres already uploaded to its official platforms.

 

The Commission urged eligible Nigerians to seize the opportunity to register, ensuring their participation in future elections.
