The Youth Party has successfully conducted primary elections across selected constituencies nationwide as part of its preparations for the 2027 general elections, signaling a major step in its efforts to strengthen internal democracy and expand its political presence across Nigeria.
The primaries, held on May 29, 2026, attracted party officials, aspirants, members, delegates, and observers from different parts of the country, reflecting growing interest in the party’s activities as it positions itself for broader participation in the next electoral cycle.
The exercise was designed to produce candidates who will represent the party in state and federal legislative elections, while also providing members with an opportunity to actively participate in the candidate selection process.
A key highlight of the primaries was the implementation of the party’s One Member One Vote (OMOV) system, which enabled all eligible members to directly vote for their preferred candidates. Party stakeholders described the process as a strong demonstration of transparency, inclusiveness, and commitment to democratic principles.
Several constituencies across the country witnessed keenly contested primaries. In Ondo State, attention centered on the Idanre State House of Assembly Constituency, where Mr. Obafusi Obatayo Johnson participated in the contest.
In Bayelsa State, Mr. Corlenius Oguara featured in the primary election for the Nembe State House Constituency, drawing significant interest among party supporters and stakeholders.
The South-East also recorded active participation, particularly in the Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency of Abia State, where Engr. Ojisi Lebechi Ogbaja sought the party’s ticket.
Other closely watched contests included the Dekina/Bassa Federal Constituency and the Kaduna North Senatorial District, both considered strategically important to the party’s expansion plans ahead of future elections.
In Lagos State, Ms. Dolapo Osunsina participated in the primary process for Eti-Osa Constituency II of the Lagos State House of Assembly, attracting attention from members and supporters within the constituency.
The primaries followed a comprehensive screening exercise during which aspirants underwent verification and eligibility assessments before being cleared to contest.
Party members described the elections as more than a candidate selection process, noting that they served as a platform for grassroots mobilisation, leadership development, and the exchange of ideas among members.
Stakeholders expressed satisfaction with the level of participation recorded during the exercise, describing turnout as encouraging and indicative of growing confidence in the party’s internal democratic structures.
According to party officials and members, the contests carried significant strategic value, especially in constituencies where the Youth Party aims to increase visibility, deepen grassroots engagement, and strengthen its support base ahead of the 2027 general elections.
As voting concluded and results continued to emerge from various constituencies, attention shifted toward campaign planning, voter outreach, and grassroots mobilisation. Supporters expressed optimism that the successful conduct of the primaries would further position the party as a credible platform committed to citizen participation, accountability, and issue-based politics.
With the emergence of candidates across participating constituencies, the Youth Party is expected to intensify preparations for the next phase of the electoral process as it seeks to make a stronger impact in the 2027 general elections.
