Yola Flood: Peter Obi Laments Nigeria’s Disaster Rate, Urges Effective Drainage Infrastructure

The Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has decried the frequency of disasters in Nigeria.

In a post via X on Thursday, Obi said managing disaster is a critical aspect of governance that every government should take seriously.

The former Anambra state governor said the needless bloodletting in the country should raise concerns for the government at all levels.
His remarks come following the flood disaster that claimed many lives in Yola, the capital of Adamawa state.

According to him, disasters must no longer be reduced to passing headlines, adding that it was time for the government to embrace a proactive approach by investing in effective drainage infrastructure to protect the people and preserve their means of livelihood.

“My heart goes out to the families of the latest disaster who have lost loved ones and to all those injured in the tragic flood in Yola.
“This is another painful reminder of the urgent need for serious investment in disaster preparedness, environmental protection, and urban infrastructure across Nigeria.

“I acknowledge and commend the prompt action taken by the State Government of Adamawa, the Police Command, and other agencies of Government in the rescue efforts,” he wrote.
