A woman believed to be mentally ill has been rescued after giving birth to a baby girl by the roadside in Kwaita village, Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.
The spokesperson of the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday. She explained that the police received a distress alert from officers of the Rapid Response Squad during a routine patrol.
According to her, the officers reported that an unidentified woman, suspected to be mentally unstable, had delivered a baby along the roadside.
Adeh said the officer in charge of the Gender Unit at Kwali Division, along with her team, quickly moved to the location following the report.
“The mother and her newborn were safely rescued and taken to General Hospital Kwali, where they received medical attention and were later discharged in stable condition,” she stated.
She added that the Welfare Officer of Kwali Area Council, Sadiq Kwali, was contacted in line with standard procedures.
Adeh further disclosed that the Commissioner of Police in the FCT, Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, commended the officers for their swift response, professionalism, and compassion in handling the situation.
