The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has refuted accusations of being double-faced in his political dealings, particularly in relation to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the 2023 presidential election.
Speaking during his monthly media chat in Abuja on Monday, Wike insisted that his decision not to support PDP’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, was made public from the onset, stressing that he has always been consistent in his stance.
“I take exception to people saying I’m double-faced. We must appreciate those who say what they will do and actually do it,” Wike said.
He emphasized that he never attended PDP campaign meetings or gave any false impression of loyalty, noting that his choice to align with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was based on principles of equity and regional balance.
“I stood for equity, fairness, and justice. I believed the South should produce the presidency in 2023,” Wike explained.
“From day one, I made it clear I was not going to support Atiku. I supported who, in my judgment, had the capacity to win and lead Nigeria out of its challenges — and I was right, Tinubu won.”
Wike, a former Governor of Rivers State and PDP stalwart, has faced criticism from some quarters for serving in an APC-led administration while still being a member of the PDP. However, he maintains that his actions are rooted in personal conviction and national interest, not betrayal.
The Minister’s latest comments are expected to stir fresh debate within the PDP as internal divisions continue to linger following the party’s defeat in the 2023 general elections.
