Ugwueme in Deep Mourning as Iconic Community Leader, Aguejiejemba, Passes On
The serene, hilly community of Ugwueme in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State was thrown into profound grief on Thursday, October 9, 2025, following the passing of Chief John Nwankwo Sunday Okeke, popularly known as the Aguejiejemba of Ugwueme. His death has triggered an outpouring of emotions, reflections and tributes from across the community, the Catholic Church, and the larger Awgu constituency.
For many, the demise of Aguejiejemba is not just the loss of a person but the fading of an era defined by courage, truth, integrity, and unwavering service to humanity. His passing has left lingering questions in the hearts of his people: Who will speak truth to power? Who will inspire our children? Who will defend the vulnerable? Who will stand for justice without compromise?
These questions mirror the life he lived—one rooted in Christian values, moral courage, selflessness and a remarkable dedication to the advancement of Ugwueme.
A fearless trade unionist, devout Christian, consummate community leader and motivator, Aguejiejemba embodied the meaning behind his title—the leopard whose name evokes fearlessness, heroism and accomplishment. He led by example, upheld integrity, and championed causes that defined the destiny of his people.
Chief Okeke’s influence touched every developmental stride in Eziobu Ugwueme autonomous community. His pivotal role in the establishment of a secondary school, among other local projects, remains one of the most enduring legacies that elevated him to the pantheon of heroes whose names are etched in the sands of time.
His life of service also sowed the seeds of leadership in his lineage. It was this legacy that propelled his son, Hon. Anthony Chukwudi Nwankwo, to a place of prominence as a current Member of the Enugu State House of Assembly. His bold intervention at a meeting with then Governor Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi—where he lamented the neglect of Ugwueme—demonstrated that the moral courage of his father did not depart with him but was inherited by a worthy son.
Today, the people of Ugwueme and Awgu stand united in reaffirming a timeless truth: that a good name is better than silver and gold. The virtues that Aguejiejemba lived by—honesty, consistency, courage, and selflessness—remain the true currency that outlives every mortal.
As Hon. Nwankwo continues to demonstrate humility, hard work, sincerity and loyalty in public service, his community sees in him a reflection of the values his father championed.
The burial of Chief John Nwankwo Sunday Okeke has been scheduled for Friday, December 19, 2025. The event is expected to attract dignitaries across political and social strata. The Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has indicated his intention to attend, alongside the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Engr. Uche Callistus Ugwu, who will lead members of the Assembly. The Senate Minority Whip, Senator Osita Ngwu, will also lead a parliamentary delegation to honour the departed icon.
The Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uchenna Okolo, is coordinating efforts to ensure that guests experience the warmth and hospitality for which the people of Awgu are known.
As preparations intensify, the Chairman of the Central Burial Planning Committee, Rt. Hon. Chiedozie Alex Ogbonnia, PhD, has called on all friends, associates, and well-wishers to stand by Hon. Nwankwo and the entire family in giving Aguejiejemba a befitting farewell.
He prayed for the peaceful repose of the soul of the departed legend, urging all men and women of goodwill to honour the memory of a man whose life remains a beacon of virtue and service.
