U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a fresh ultimatum to Russian President Vladimir Putin, demanding an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine within 10 to 12 days or risk severe economic penalties from the United States.
Trump made the announcement during a July 28 meeting with newly elected U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Scotland. Expressing disappointment over the lack of progress toward peace, he declared, “I’m setting a new deadline — around ten to twelve days from today. Waiting longer makes no sense.”
This move marks a significant shift from Trump’s earlier 50-day deadline issued on July 14, which would have expired on September 2. The new timeline dramatically shortens the window for potential negotiations or de-escalation.
“If Russia doesn’t act, we’re not just talking sanctions. We could also introduce secondary tariffs on nations still doing business with Russia,” Trump warned, making it clear that the pressure would extend beyond Moscow.
Trump criticized Putin for allegedly feigning interest in peace while continuing missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities. “He acts like he wants a deal, but then the bombs fall. It’s senseless,” Trump said. “Too many people are dying. This war needs to end.”
Since returning to office, Trump has tried to strike a balanced tone, initially blaming both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for prolonging the conflict. However, in recent weeks, his remarks have become more sharply directed at Russia.
“This isn’t about politics anymore — it’s about common sense,” Trump said. “We’ll soon see if Putin is serious.”
