Troops Reject N13.7 Million Bribe from Terrorists, Arrest 12 in Plateau and Kaduna – DHQ

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has revealed that troops of Operation Safe Haven turned down a N13.7 million bribe offered by terrorists during a counter-terrorism operation along the Jos-Sanga Road in Plateau State.

Maj.-Gen. Markus Kangye, Director of Defence Media Operations, made the disclosure on Thursday during a press briefing on ongoing military operations across the country.

According to him, troops responded to a distress call regarding terrorist activities in the area and intercepted two suspects who attempted to offer a cash bribe to evade arrest. The troops declined the bribe, arrested the individuals, and recovered the N13.7 million, along with weapons, ammunition, and a vehicle riddled with bullet holes.

“In line with their professional conduct, the troops refused the bribe and took the suspects into custody. The recovered items are currently in the possession of the military while investigations are ongoing,” Kangye said.

He also disclosed that troops carried out offensive operations in Bassa, Barkin Ladi, South Wase, Riyom, and Jos East Local Government Areas of Plateau State, as well as Kaura and Sanga LGAs in Kaduna State. These operations resulted in the arrest of 12 suspects, the rescue of three kidnapped victims, and the neutralization of several extremists.

“During these operations, troops recovered various weapons, ammunition, motorcycles, vehicles, and illicit drugs,” he added.

Additionally, seven militias and criminals were arrested during routine patrols in Barkin Ladi and Jos South LGAs of Plateau, and Wamba and Sanga LGAs of Nasarawa and Kaduna States respectively.

Commending the troops for their bravery and professionalism, Kangye urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and continue supporting security agencies in the ongoing war against terrorism and criminality.

“As the military intensifies efforts to conclude ongoing operations, we call on the public and media to sustain their support. Cooperation and timely reporting of suspicious activities remain vital to achieving lasting peace and security,” he concluded.
