The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Anambra State by three days following impressive turnout and appeals from citizens.
This decision was made during INEC’s regular weekly meeting held on Thursday, where the Commission reviewed preparations for the upcoming off-cycle governorship election in Anambra and updates on new political party applications.
In a statement by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, INEC said the CVR, initially scheduled to end on Thursday, July 17, will now continue until Sunday, July 20, 2025.
“The extension is in response to appeals from stakeholders and citizens who have demonstrated commendable enthusiasm during the exercise,” the Commission noted.
INEC reported that as of Wednesday, July 16, a total of 96,085 new voters had been registered in just nine days across the state’s 326 registration centres—an average of over 10,600 registrations per day.
In addition:
12,595 voters applied to transfer their registration within or outside Anambra,
7,061 persons requested updates to their records or replacement of lost/damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
At this early stage, INEC revealed that:
56,017 (58%) of the new registrants are female, and
50,429 (52.48%) are youths aged 18–34.
Following the CVR, the Commission will display the preliminary voter register for claims and objections, in line with the Electoral Act. A thorough data clean-up using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) will follow, ahead of the election.
The Commission promised to release a full demographic breakdown of the registrants, including age, gender, occupation, and disability status, in due course.
INEC has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring an inclusive, transparent, and credible electoral process in Anambra State. Citizens are urged to take advantage of the extended CVR window and participate actively in the democratic process.
