President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the immediate implementation of pension increases and a minimum pension guarantee for retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), following protests by retired police officers in Abuja demanding better welfare.
The President also directed the rollout of free healthcare for low-income retirees nationwide.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said Tinubu issued the directives after receiving a briefing from the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Omolola Oloworaran.
The President emphasized the need to urgently resolve the lingering police pension issue, stressing that officers who risk their lives in service to the nation must be allowed to retire with dignity and peace of mind.
DG Oloworaran, during her briefing, outlined ongoing efforts to protect pension fund value amidst inflation and economic challenges, and announced plans to introduce foreign currency contributions to include Nigerians in the Diaspora in the pension system.
President Tinubu backed the proposed reforms, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to inclusive economic growth and social protection for all Nigerians, especially retirees.
Oloworaran also detailed a range of transformative initiatives aimed at improving retiree welfare and broadening pension coverage across the country.
This policy action comes on the heels of a public demonstration in Abuja by police retirees calling for urgent reform of their pension entitlements.
