Tinubu Meets Kwankwaso Ally Jibrin Amid Defection Speculations and Northern Criticism

President Bola Tinubu held a private meeting on Wednesday with Abdulmumin Jibrin, a key ally of New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) leader Rabiu Kwankwaso, at the State House in Abuja.

The meeting has fueled speculation over a possible defection of Kwankwaso and his supporters to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), especially as the NNPP presidential candidate has recently criticized Tinubu’s handling of issues related to northern development and inclusion.

Jibrin, who represents the Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency and maintains close ties with both Tinubu and Kwankwaso, confirmed to reporters after the meeting that their discussion focused on major national matters. However, he carefully avoided confirming any plans to rejoin the APC.

“I do not think it is time for that conversation. But everything is open, and everything is a possibility. The most important thing is the country’s unity and stability. When we get to the bridge, we’ll cross it,” Jibrin said.

His visit to the Presidential Villa comes at a politically sensitive time, intensifying speculation about realignments ahead of 2027. When asked if the meeting aimed to mend political differences between Tinubu and Kwankwaso, Jibrin dismissed the notion.

“The president is a first-class politician. Kwankwaso is also a seasoned politician. Both are deeply committed to Nigeria’s peace and prosperity. So, my presence in the Villa should not raise concerns,” he stated.

Asked about Tinubu’s performance in addressing northern concerns, Jibrin offered a diplomatic response: “Every leader does his best. You can choose to see the cup half full or half empty. Opinions differ, but they can help enrich national discourse — and sometimes even be a blessing in disguise.”
