President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, on the occasion of his 99th birthday, describing him as a rare and exemplary Nigerian who has dedicated his life to public service with integrity and distinction.

In a heartfelt message commemorating the milestone, President Tinubu praised Fasoranti’s unwavering commitment to progressive ideals, his resilience in the face of adversity, and his role as a beacon of principled leadership.

“He is undoubtedly one of the rare Nigerians who gave all to public service and served unblemished at every opportunity,” Tinubu said.

Reflecting on Fasoranti’s courageous stand during Nigeria’s most turbulent political periods, the President lauded his resistance to military dictatorship, particularly during the regime of General Sani Abacha, when the Afenifere leader and his allies in NADECO stood firmly against tyranny.

“In Nigeria’s darkest hours under military rule, Baba Fasoranti and his comrades remained unbowed. Their courage inspired and strengthened us, the younger generation,” Tinubu recalled.

The President highlighted the veteran politician’s enduring influence on Nigerian politics, noting that Fasoranti’s values and leadership style have shaped generations of public servants and activists.

“Baba Fasoranti has been a dependable and graceful leader whose example continues to inspire. In my personal relationship with him, I have witnessed his wisdom, sincerity, and steadfastness,” he said.

Tinubu recounted his visit to Fasoranti in Akure three years ago while preparing to contest the presidency, expressing gratitude for the elder statesman’s support and blessings.

He also lauded Fasoranti’s professional background as a teacher and educationist, who after a successful career in public education, founded Omolere Nursery School and Akure High School—institutions that continue to reflect his passion for community development.

 

Delving into Fasoranti’s political journey, Tinubu noted his active role in Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s Action Group and later, the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN). He hailed Fasoranti’s tenure as Commissioner for Finance under Governor Adekunle Ajasin, crediting him with the effective implementation of the UPN’s signature programmes—free education, free healthcare, rural development, and employment generation.

“His sound fiscal management ensured the Ajasin administration’s lasting impact across Ondo State and beyond,” Tinubu noted.

He further commended Fasoranti’s Christian faith and emotional strength, particularly in enduring personal tragedies with grace and fortitude.

“In moments of deep personal loss, Baba has drawn strength from his faith and continued to be a source of inspiration to many,” the President said.

 

Tinubu expressed satisfaction that Fasoranti has lived to witness the current administration’s economic reforms, which aim to place Nigeria on a path of sustainable development.

 

“I am glad that Baba is here to see the transformative steps we are taking to reposition Nigeria’s economy and restore national prosperity,” he said.

 

 

 

In conclusion, the President urged all Nigerians to draw from Fasoranti’s exemplary life, marked by courage, service, and moral clarity.
