Team Lagos have emerged champions of the 9th National Youth Games, dethroning defending champions Team Delta at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.
The new champions were officially declared winners at the closing ceremony on Saturday. Chief Amaka Ashiofu, who represented the chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, announced that Team Lagos secured a total of 110 medals — 52 gold, 32 silver, and 26 bronze.
Defending champions, Team Delta, finished second despite winning the highest total number of medals at 114. Their haul comprised 37 gold, 38 silver, and 39 bronze.
Team Edo, who had been in second place before the final day, dropped to third position with 79 medals — 33 gold, 18 silver, and 28 bronze.
Overall, athletes from 33 states mounted the podium at the 9th edition of the Games, with a combined total of 802 medals awarded: 246 gold, 236 silver, and 320 bronze.
The National Youth Games continue to serve as a breeding ground for Nigeria’s future sports stars, with Team Lagos now leading the new chapter in the competition’s history.
