Subsume sectional interests for national unity, Buhari charges Nigerians

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Saturday called on Nigerians to subsume their personal and sectional interests for national unity.

According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President made the call while speaking at the Combined Passing Out Parade of the Cadets of 67 Regular Course and Short Service Course 46 (Army) at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna.

The statement was titled, ‘President Buhari restates confidence in Army, assures of more support to boost manpower, hardware, logistics.’

Buhari’s call came at a time there are growing agitations for the Republics of Biafra and Oduduwa in the South-Eastern and South-Western parts of the country respectively.

The President was quoted as urging Nigerians that despite their obvious differences, they must work to strengthen the nation’s democracy.

He appealed to them to uphold and project the unity of the country.

“Despite our obvious differences, we must strive to ensure that our actions, and utterances are aimed towards strengthening our democratic framework.

“We must subsume our personal and sectional interests to the overall national aspirations of unity, economic prosperity and good governance,” the President said.

Buhari further stressed that the nation is passing through a time of great need for cohesion, peace and unit.

He was further quoted as expressing confidence in the ability of the Nigerian Army to protect the territorial integrity of the nation, particularly in the ongoing war against terrorism, banditry and kidnapping.

He was said to have assured stakeholders that the Federal Government will increase manpower and improve training to meet the changing dynamics of security in the country.

The President noted that the government remains focused in the fight against insurgency, armed banditry and other forms of criminality across the nation.

He said, “We remain committed to ending the security challenges bedevilling the country. I am confident that the training received by the passing out cadets has adequately equipped them to face any challenges in their line of duty.”
