A tragic incident unfolded in the Olosha area of Mushin, Lagos State, on Wednesday evening, as a 12-year-old boy named Wasiu was fatally struck by a stray bullet during a violent clash between rival cult groups.
The confrontation reportedly erupted around 8:00 p.m., plunging the community into chaos and forcing residents and shop owners to flee or seek shelter.
According to eyewitnesses, Wasiu had stepped out to buy food from a local vendor, commonly known as Iya Ibeji, when gunshots rang out. “We heard gunshots and everyone started running. Shops were shut immediately,” said Tale Amoo, a resident.
Amoo explained that Wasiu was caught in the crossfire while trying to escape the area. “He was just waiting for his food when it started. As he tried to run, a stray bullet hit him,” he said.
Another resident, who requested anonymity, confirmed that Wasiu was found lifeless after the gunfire subsided. Attempts to rush him to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) failed, as the hospital’s main entrance was reportedly locked.
“The roads were blocked and the area was too tense. Some cult members were still around. Even when an alternate route was attempted, it was unsafe,” the source said.
Residents say Mushin has been experiencing a surge in cult-related violence, with frequent gunfire creating widespread fear in the community.
“The shootings went on for hours. The area around LUTH has been under siege. A child lost his life. It’s heartbreaking,” another local said.
Reacting to the incident, Vice Chairman of Mushin Local Government Area, Tubosun Aruwe, issued a statement condemning the violence and mourning the loss.
“I am deeply saddened and horrified by the senseless violence in Olosha last night. The death of an innocent child is a tragedy that shakes us all,” he said.
He extended heartfelt condolences to Wasiu’s family and others affected by recent violence, vowing to support investigations and justice efforts. “We demand swift action from security agencies to ensure those behind this heinous act are brought to book.”
Attempts to get a response from the Lagos State Police Command were unsuccessful, as spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin had yet to respond to inquiries as of press time.
