Shehu Sani Urges Lawmakers to Put National Interest Above Personal Gain

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has cautioned members of the National Assembly against enacting laws driven by personal interests, urging them instead to focus on decisions that will positively shape Nigeria’s future.

Speaking on Tuesday at the 2026 National Assembly Open Week, Sani reminded lawmakers that their legacy would not be defined by the number of bills they passed or oversight functions they carried out, but by the courageous positions they took on critical national issues.

He stressed that no elected official remains in office forever and encouraged legislators to use their time in parliament to leave a lasting impact that future generations would remember.

Sani also called on Nigerians, especially public office holders, to defend the country’s image and uphold its dignity whenever it is unfairly criticized, describing Nigeria as a nation that has made significant contributions to peace, freedom, and human dignity across the world.
