The Nigerian Senate has dismissed media reports suggesting a rift between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, describing the claims as baseless and misleading.
Speculations had emerged following an executive session, alleging that the two top lawmakers clashed over whether the Senate should proceed on its annual recess. However, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, debunked the reports in a statement issued on Sunday.
Adaramodu clarified that no such clash occurred, stressing that healthy debates are a regular and essential part of parliamentary procedure, not signs of discord.
“Our attention has been drawn to diverse media reports claiming that President of the Senate, His Excellency Godswill Akpabio, and Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, clashed during a recent executive session. The reports are entirely untrue and misrepresent normal legislative proceedings,” the statement read.
He explained that, like parliaments across the world, the Nigerian Senate engages in robust and sometimes heated debates to critically assess policies before making decisions, regardless of political affiliations.
“Debates—whether in the chamber or committee room—are standard practice. They should not be misconstrued as personal altercations or evidence of leadership conflict,” Adaramodu stated.
He reaffirmed that Senate deliberations are always guided by the commitment to act in the best interest of over 230 million Nigerians.
