A scabies outbreak has struck a community in Guyuk Local Government Area of Adamawa State, infecting about 150 people and spreading rapidly across six wards.
According to the Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer for Guyuk, Abdul Sheji, the affected wards include Dukul, Bobini, Lokoro, Guyuk, Banjiram, and Purokayo — all within the densely populated Nungura land area.
Scabies, a highly contagious skin disease caused by mites, spreads easily through direct skin contact or the sharing of infested clothing and bedding. Sheji explained that the local health authorities have already taken steps to contain the outbreak.
“We have sent an inventory of the affected persons to the Primary Health Care Development Agency in Yola for quick intervention,” he said.
The Executive Secretary for Health in Guyuk LGA, Mrs. Eriya Daniel, also confirmed the outbreak and appealed for urgent assistance from both government and non-governmental organisations to help prevent further spread.
Health officials have advised residents to maintain proper hygiene, avoid sharing personal items, and seek medical treatment immediately if symptoms such as intense itching or skin rashes appear.
Efforts are currently underway to provide medical support and curb the infection in the affected communities.
