Sahara Group Launches $50,000 Innovation Challenge to Advance Africa’s Energy Transition

Sahara Group has launched the Asharami M.A.D Equation, a $50,000 innovation programme aimed at accelerating Africa’s energy transition by transforming research-based ideas into practical, scalable solutions that improve energy access, system resilience, and sustainable development across the continent.

The initiative, themed “Asharami M.A.D Equation: Solving for Sahara Beyond XXX,” seeks to bridge the gap between academic research and real-world implementation by connecting African researchers with operational challenges across the energy value chain.

The programme is designed to address a longstanding challenge within Africa’s innovation ecosystem, where many groundbreaking research projects remain within academic circles without progressing to industry application. Through the initiative, Sahara Group aims to provide a platform for innovative ideas to move from theory to large-scale impact.

Speaking on the programme, Director of Governance and Sustainability at Sahara Group, Ejiro Gray, said Africa’s energy future depends on its ability to convert knowledge into practical solutions.

She noted that the Asharami M.A.D Equation was created to unlock the vast potential within Africa’s research and academic communities by linking innovation directly to industry needs.

According to her, the initiative will nurture a new generation of problem-solvers capable of delivering solutions that improve energy reliability, expand access, and support sustainability objectives across the continent.

The programme is open to innovators from across Africa, particularly postgraduate students and advanced researchers. Entries will be assessed based on analytical depth, practical relevance, scalability, and alignment with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles.

Head of Corporate Communications at Sahara Group, Bethel Obioma, described the initiative as more than a funding opportunity, saying it represents a strategic investment in African ingenuity.

He explained that the programme is designed to help innovators transform research into practical solutions that strengthen energy systems, improve livelihoods, and promote inclusive economic growth.

Participants will compete for a total prize pool of $50,000, with the winner receiving $25,000, while second and third place winners will receive $15,000 and $10,000 respectively. Successful participants will also gain access to mentorship, technical support, and opportunities to implement their ideas within Sahara Group’s operations.

The programme will focus on key challenges within the oil, gas, and power sectors, including digitalisation of upstream operations, predictive maintenance, power reliability, and grid optimisation.

Applications are currently open, with interested participants able to obtain eligibility requirements and registration details through the programme’s website. Entries close on June 20, 2026.
