Quantus Medical Foundation Launches Healthcare Reform Training in Abia State

A United States-based non-profit organisation, Quantus Medical Foundation, has begun training personnel of the Abia State Ministry of Health as part of efforts to improve healthcare delivery and reshape service culture in Abia State.

The initiative is being implemented under its flagship programme, WeCare Nigeria, in collaboration with the state government, and is expected to lead to the establishment of the Abia Health Care Reform Initiative (AHCRI).

Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the foundation, Nnenna Ihekoromadu, explained that the week-long programme includes leadership engagement, Basic Life Support (BLS) training, compassionate care practices, and the training and deployment of Patient Liaison Officers (PLOs). These components are designed to enhance emergency response, improve patient experience, and strengthen accountability within hospitals.

She noted that the reform is guided by the CARE model—Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence—which aims to build a more responsive and patient-centred healthcare system in the state.

The programme, which runs from April 14 to April 23, 2026, involves a wide range of healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists, laboratory staff, and hospital administrators, working together to improve service delivery.

So far, about 60 healthcare workers have received training in Basic Life Support, particularly in patient resuscitation, while selected individuals are being trained as Patient Liaison Officers to monitor service delivery and ensure compliance with standards.

Key hospitals selected for the pilot phase include Abia Specialist Hospital in Umuahia, General Hospital in Aba, and Abia State University Teaching Hospital in Aba.

Ihekoromadu described the initiative as a practical approach to healthcare transformation, stressing that aligning leadership, systems, and frontline workers would result in safer, faster, and more compassionate care for patients, especially in emergency situations.

The foundation added that the current phase is aimed at establishing a working model that can be expanded to other hospitals and eventually across the wider healthcare system in the state.
