The Presidency has commended former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, for his patriotic stance on comments made by United States President Donald Trump, who threatened possible military action in Nigeria.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, in a post on X on Sunday, described Kwankwaso’s position as an act of patriotism and urged other political leaders to emulate him and rally behind the country during the ongoing diplomatic tensions.
“Thank you, Senator Kwankwaso, for your patriotism. This is a time for all political leaders, across the divide, to unite behind our country and speak out as patriots,” Onanuga wrote.
Kwankwaso, in a statement, countered the claim of a Christian massacre, stating that insecurity in Nigeria “does not distinguish based on religious, ethnic, or political beliefs.”
He urged Trump’s administration to assist Nigerian authorities with advanced technology to tackle security challenges rather than issuing threats that could further divide the nation.
Last week, Trump designated Nigeria as a country of particular concern, citing what he described as ongoing violence against Christians and the government’s alleged failure to protect religious minorities.
However, the Nigerian government denied claims of persecution against any religious groups in the country.
On Saturday, Trump reiterated his threat of possible military action against Nigeria if the situation was not addressed promptly.
