Police Arrest INEC Officials, Others with ₦2.5m During Bye-Election

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and a driver over alleged electoral offences during the Federal Constituency bye-election held in Iperu Remo on Saturday.

 

Spokesperson of the Command, CSP Omolola Odutola, disclosed in a statement that the suspects were apprehended at about 12:45 a.m. by a police patrol team attached to the Iperu Remo Division.

 

According to her, a Mitsubishi Spacewagon vehicle with registration number Lagos AKD 887 HT, conveying three occupants—Mr. Toryem Joe-Stans and Ms. Mandara Aminat (both INEC officials), as well as their driver—was intercepted in the area.

 

“During a search of the vehicle, the team recovered a cash sum of ₦2,500,000.00 (two million, five hundred thousand naira) found in possession of Mr. Joe-Stans Toryem,” Odutola stated.

 

She added that during interrogation, Toryem confessed to having collected the money at Kehoy Hotel in Iperu from an individual he identified only as ‘Political Solution.’

 

The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, has directed that the suspects be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, for further investigation.
