Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised what he described as “double standards” in the handling of the case involving Ms. Emmanson Comfort, a female passenger accused of assaulting an Ibom Air crew member.
In a statement posted on X, Obi apologised to the airline’s staff but condemned the “dehumanising” treatment meted out to Emmanson, who was allegedly stripped in public before being taken to court and remanded.
The former Anambra State governor argued that it was unacceptable for Emmanson to be swiftly prosecuted while another individual, accused of disrupting a flight and endangering passengers, had not been arrested or arraigned.
“This case is not just about one young woman, it is about the double standards that poison our justice system,” Obi said. “Justice in Nigeria should not depend on wealth, influence, or access to government officials.”
He urged authorities, including the Minister of Aviation, to address the alleged disparity in treatment and ensure that justice is applied equally to all citizens.
The case drew further attention due to a recent incident involving Nigerian Fuji musician, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate, who was removed from a ValueJet flight at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja for allegedly violating aviation security regulations. Despite the breach, he has not been arrested or prosecuted by Nigerian authorities.
