The Founder and Chairman of Legacy FM Radio and Television, Senator Obinna Ogba, has dismissed claims that Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, influenced the suspension of the station’s Acting General Manager, Mr. Godfrey Chikwere.
Chikwere was suspended over what the management described as gross misconduct and violation of the company’s internal code of conduct. His suspension followed an edition of his programme, Inside Politics, where he hosted journalist Charles Otu to discuss alleged underperformance by some state government officials.
Addressing journalists in Abakaliki, Ogba said the decision was purely an internal disciplinary matter, insisting that Chikwere had repeatedly flouted company policies despite multiple warnings.
“He has been doing well, but you know in every organisation, there are codes of conduct. If you listened to the announcement of the suspension, it was very clear that it was for not obeying the code of conduct of the establishment. I have warned him before, first one, second one so I felt bad when I heard people say the governor directed the suspension. I take exception to that; it’s an insult to my person,” Ogba said.
The senator stressed that Legacy FM was established before Governor Nwifuru took office, and that the governor has never interfered in the station’s operations.
“Since its establishment, the governor has never interfered, and nobody has. When I couldn’t stomach it anymore, I asked him to go and rest for a while. It has nothing to do with the government of Ebonyi State,” he added.
Ogba expressed readiness to reinstate Chikwere if he shows remorse, apologises to management, and recommits to upholding the station’s code of conduct.
