Nollywood actress Peju Johnson has addressed the wave of criticism that followed the release of her latest movie, Right Thing, which premiered on her YouTube channel.
Although the film has drawn attention for its storyline, a particular intimate scene featuring Johnson and a co-star has sparked widespread debate online, with many viewers sharing mixed reactions.
Speaking on the controversy, the actress explained that she understands the pressures that come with being in the spotlight, especially after leaving other career paths such as law and medicine to fully embrace acting.
Johnson clarified that her personal life is often misunderstood, noting that she is not interested in men or sexual relationships, a fact those close to her are aware of. She expressed frustration at being judged based on a movie role, emphasising that acting should not be confused with real-life choices.
She further revealed that past experiences, including childhood trauma, have shaped her views on relationships and intimacy.
The actress also spoke against the recurring stereotype in the Nigerian film industry that labels successful and attractive actresses as promiscuous. According to her, such assumptions are unfair and reflect deep-seated societal bias.
Johnson urged the public to separate fiction from reality and to stop projecting moral judgments on actors based on the roles they portray.
