PDP Can Reclaim Lost Ground Despite Recent Defections, Moro Says

The Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, has expressed confidence that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will recover and re-emerge stronger despite the recent exit of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his 2023 running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa.

Moro, who represents Benue South in the Senate, made this known during an appearance on Sunday Politics, a political affairs programme aired by Channels Television.

The lawmaker, who did not mince words, described the departure of Atiku and Okowa from the party as “good riddance to bad rubbish.”

He accused both men of contributing to the internal crisis that rocked the PDP following the 2023 general election, which saw the party lose its grip on the presidency.

“Good riddance to bad rubbish,” Moro said, blaming the pair for the post-election disunity within the party.

He noted that their involvement in the internal wrangling weakened the PDP’s structure and electoral chances, but he expressed optimism about the party’s future without them.

Despite the turbulence, Moro said the PDP has the capacity to bounce back, reorganize, and take on a formidable opposition role ahead of the 2027 elections.

He urged members still loyal to the party to stay focused on rebuilding efforts rather than dwelling on recent defections.

The senator also used the opportunity to speak on the importance of respecting the unwritten North-South rotational agreement in Nigeria’s presidency, warning against any move by political parties to field northern candidates again in 2027.

Moro maintained that Nigerians had already rejected a north-to-north power transition in the 2023 polls, referencing PDP’s decision to field Atiku Abubakar to succeed former President Muhammadu Buhari both from the northern region.

Meanwhile, the opposition is regrouping under a new umbrella as key political figures including Atiku, Peter Obi, David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi, and Nasir El-Rufai have adopted the African Democratic Party (ADC) as a common platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

Despite this, Moro remains optimistic that the PDP can reclaim its lost ground even in the face of new alliances.
