Several passengers sustained injuries on Monday after a train on the busy Abuja–Kaduna rail route derailed while travelling from Kaduna to Abuja, forcing the journey to stop halfway.
The incident occurred along the railway line connecting the Federal Capital Territory with Kaduna State, leaving the passenger train unable to arrive at its destination as planned.
A source within the Nigerian Railway Corporation confirmed that the incident happened but declined to give further information, explaining that he was not authorised to speak publicly about it.
Passengers on board said panic broke out when the train suddenly jerked and came to an abrupt halt. Some travellers reported hearing a loud bang before the coaches began shaking violently, throwing several passengers from their seats and creating confusion inside the compartments.
According to eyewitnesses, the Abuja-bound train allegedly collided with another train along the corridor, forcing rail services to pause temporarily while authorities assessed the situation.
One passenger, Sada Malumfashi, shared his experience on X, saying, “I just got off the Kaduna-Abuja train. We heard a loud bang and the train suddenly stopped, throwing people around. Some passengers were injured, with several bleeding badly.”
He added that the train remained stationary for about 30 minutes before slowly continuing its journey toward Kubwa, noting that passengers were not immediately informed by railway authorities about what had happened.
