One Dead, livestock killed, Many Injured as Herder-Farmer Tensions Boil Over in Bogoro

 

Clashes between herders and farmers in Bogoro Local Government Area of Bauchi State left one person dead, while some cows and a flock of sheep were killed.

According to Wakil, the village head, Emmanuel Bulus, reported the incident on August 7 that the deceased did not return home and a search party was conducted within the farm area, which led to the discovery of his corpse.

A team of policemen led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), SP Fitoka Golda, swung into action, on the receipt of the report, went to the scene and moved the deceased to Bogoro General Hospital, where a medical doctor certified him dead.

According to the police spokesman, “A preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased was suspected to have been killed by anonymous people, which led some irate locals to invade some herders to stab approximately 20 cows, 19 sheep and injure several others.”

He further explained that about 249 cows were rescued by the police, and one Ahmadu Mairiga, who was suspected to be responsible for the tragic death of Irmiya Yohanna, was successfully arrested.

CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, the Commissioner of police in the state conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the scene, as well as met the chairman of Bogoro, Fulalani heads (Ardo), traditional rulers, Sayawa leaders and other relevant stakeholders.

He also addressed locals who converged in front of Bogoro Divisional Police headquarters on the efforts and measures put in place by the command towards unraveling the true position of the situation, with a view of ensuring peace in the area.

The CP appealed to members of the Bogoro community to exercise patience, and warned them against breaching the law.
