Ojukwu varsity laments loss of students to motorcycle accidents

The Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Anambra State, may ban students of the institution from using motorcycles as a means of transport.

This followed the death of three female students at the Igbariam campus of the university in three separate motorcycle accidents between Friday and Sunday.

One of the deceased was said to be a final-year student.

“She was rushing to catch up with an early morning lecture when she was killed by a motorcyclist,” a source said.

The Public Relations Officer of the university, Dr Chukwueloka Christian, blamed the deaths on the recklessness of motorcyclists.

He regretted that students had disobeyed warnings against the use of motorcycles as means of transportation.

He said, “We have several times appealed to students living off campus to leave their hostels early enough so that they can join the shuttle buses and meet up with their lectures.

“We have also written severally to the state government to construct speed breakers on the road to the school, but we have yet to receive any positive response.

“The VC is not relenting in ensuring more hostels are built for students. The management has already signed a memorandum of understanding with four firms in that respect. One has already commenced work.”

Chukwueloka said the three deceased students were a 400-level student of English Education, a 200-level English student, and a student in the Department of Philosophy.
