NiMet Predicts Widespread Thunderstorms and Rainfall Across Nigeria from Saturday to Monday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thundery and rainy weather across various parts of the country from Saturday to Monday.

 

In its weather outlook released on Friday in Abuja, NiMet projected early morning thunderstorms on Saturday over parts of Taraba, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Adamawa States. Later in the day, thunderstorms with rain are expected to spread across Kebbi, Taraba, Zamfara, Borno, Kaduna, Sokoto, Gombe, and Bauchi States.

 

For the North-Central region, morning thunderstorms are expected over Benue, Plateau, Niger, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Nasarawa, with further activity expected in Kwara, Kogi, and other areas later in the day.

 

In the Southern region, morning rains are likely in Enugu, Ebonyi, Cross River, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Bayelsa States. By evening, isolated thunderstorms and rains are expected across most southern states, including Imo, Abia, Anambra, Ondo, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ekiti, Edo, Delta, and others.

 

Sunday will bring similar weather, with early morning thunderstorms predicted in Kaduna, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba States, and more extensive rain and thunderstorm activity later in Gombe, Bauchi, and other Northern states.

 

In the North-Central zone, patchy clouds with sunshine are expected in the morning, followed by thunderstorms and rain later in the day across much of the region.

 

The Southern region is forecast to experience morning thunderstorms in Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River, followed by widespread evening storms across the entire zone.

 

By Monday, morning thunderstorms are forecast for Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba, with broader coverage in Kano, Katsina, Gombe, and Bauchi later in the day.

 

The North-Central and Southern regions will continue to experience patchy morning clouds, thunderstorms, and widespread evening rains.

 

NiMet has advised the public to take adequate precautions, noting that strong winds may precede rainfall in some areas. Residents are urged to:

 

Secure loose items

 

Avoid driving during heavy rain

 

Stay indoors during storms

 

Disconnect electrical appliances

 

Stay clear of tall trees

 

 

Airline operators are advised to obtain airport-specific forecasts from NiMet for safe flight operations.
