A Nigerian aspiring fashion designer, Sheriff Shittu, was fatally shot during a confrontation inside a nightclub in New York City, according to police and family members.
Authorities said the shooting occurred around 4:25 a.m. on Saturday at Quilox Restaurant and Lounge located in the East Flatbush neighbourhood of Brooklyn. Sheriff had visited the club with his younger brother, Fawaz Shittu, to celebrate a friend’s birthday, just a day before their mother was scheduled to arrive from Nigeria.
Fawaz explained that the incident began when an intoxicated patron allegedly harassed several women at the venue, including Sheriff’s girlfriend. Sheriff stepped in, which led to a physical confrontation. Although the brothers left the club shortly afterward, they returned when Sheriff realised he had left his phone behind.
According to Fawaz, the suspected gunman was being escorted out when shots were suddenly fired. “I was calling his name and trying to wake him up,” he said. He added that the club owner had earlier tried to ease tensions, describing the suspect as unstable.
Emergency services transported Sheriff to Brookdale University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The suspect fled the scene and remains at large. Fawaz raised concerns about security at the venue, questioning how a firearm was brought inside despite supposed checks.
Sheriff moved to the United States from Nigeria in 2018. While pursuing his dream in fashion through his brand, Riff Ent, he worked as a security guard. Family members described him as caring, protective, and hardworking. His 60-year-old mother, Foluke Shittu, reportedly received the devastating news shortly after arriving in the U.S. for her visit.
The family is demanding justice, with his brother Salem calling for the maximum penalty if the suspect is apprehended, urging authorities to ensure accountability under the law.
