Minister of Works, David Umahi, has thrown his weight behind the firm measures introduced by Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, in Amasiri community, Afikpo Local Government Area, following the violent clash with neighbouring communities of Akpoha and Okporojo in Edda LGA.
The crisis reportedly resulted in the killing of several indigenes from Akpoha and Okporojo, with some victims allegedly beheaded. Umahi said the strict steps taken by the state government were necessary to restore calm and prevent the situation from escalating into a full-scale communal conflict.
In a statement he personally signed and shared on social media, the former Ebonyi governor recalled efforts made during his administration (2015–2023) to resolve the lingering land disputes among the affected communities. He noted that the current governor, who was then Speaker of the State House of Assembly, played a key role in peace efforts at the time.
Umahi condemned the killings, describing them as inhumane and unfortunate, especially among communities he said share deep cultural ties and a long history of peaceful coexistence. He stressed that Amasiri and Oso-Edda people are “brothers and sisters” whose shared heritage should not be overshadowed by land disputes.
He explained that while previous disagreements between Amasiri and Amangwu-Edda were nearing permanent resolution — including federal intervention that allocated an army depot settlement to address disputed land — the recent violence disrupted ongoing peace processes, including physical boundary demarcations already initiated by the present administration.
The minister revealed that he has maintained constant communication with community leaders and the governor since the outbreak of the crisis, expressing full support for the measures taken, including the temporary closure of schools and the imposition of a curfew, which has since been partially relaxed. According to him, the steps were designed primarily to protect lives and prevent reprisal attacks, as tensions remain high.
Umahi dismissed criticisms of the governor’s actions, arguing that those condemning the measures may not fully understand the security implications involved in managing such a volatile situation. He maintained that Governor Nwifuru has acted without bias and within his constitutional responsibility as Chief Security Officer of the state.
He appealed to both parties to remain calm, trust the ongoing peace process, and comply with the conditions outlined by the state government to achieve lasting reconciliation.
Encouraging the governor to remain focused despite criticism, Umahi urged him to continue discharging his mandate with courage and faith, while prioritising the protection of lives and property across the state.
