Nigeria and Switzerland have reaffirmed their bilateral ties, agreeing on renewed cooperation in trade, security, immigration, cultural exchange, and concrete steps toward returning looted Benin artefacts.
The agreement emerged during a high-level meeting in Abuja, hosted by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, with his Swiss counterpart, Ignazio Cassis, in attendance.
Speaking after the engagement, Tuggar noted that the renewed partnership underscores a shared commitment to mutual growth and respect. “Nigeria and Switzerland enjoy long-standing relations, and today’s discussions have opened new avenues for cooperation in trade, security, migration, and cultural exchange,” he said.
On the planned return of Benin artefacts, Tuggar described it as a milestone in justice and cultural restoration. “Returning the artefacts taken during the Benin Expedition of 1897 is not just symbolic; it recognises our history and identity,” he added.
Cassis reaffirmed Switzerland’s commitment to deepening collaboration with Nigeria across multiple sectors, highlighting economic development, security cooperation, and migration management.
Both nations also agreed to boost trade and investment by promoting private-sector partnerships and enhancing cooperation to combat transnational crime while facilitating safe and orderly migration. The engagement is expected to strengthen diplomatic relations and advance efforts for cultural restitution.
