Suspended Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has been told to prepare for the legal consequences of her actions after failing to substantiate allegations of defamation.
In a statement issued by the spokesman of the Northern Ethnic Youth Group Assembly (NEYGA), Ibrahim Dan-Musa, the group challenged Akpoti to prove her claims in court or be ready to face justice. Dan-Musa described her conduct as damaging to the integrity of Nigeria’s political system.
“A senator who peddles lies must face the consequences. She cannot simply accuse top-ranking officials without proof and expect to go unpunished,” he said.
Dan-Musa also criticized former Education Minister, Oby Ezekwesili, for defending Akpoti, calling her stance hypocritical. He emphasized that no one is above the law, regardless of their social status or past achievements.
“The law must apply to everyone. Ezekwesili’s defence is both misleading and disappointing,” he added.
He further noted that the international community is closely monitoring the case.
“From the United Nations to Fox News, the world is watching to see whether Nigeria will uphold the rule of law or allow baseless defamation to go unchecked,” Dan-Musa said.
The controversy stems from Senator Akpoti’s accusation that Senate President Godswill Akpabio made sexual advances toward her and later denied her privileges in retaliation for her refusal. Following her failure to provide evidence, Akpoti was suspended from the Senate for six months.
Akpabio has since taken legal action, suing the suspended senator for defamation.
