A member of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly representing Lafia Central Constituency, Solomon Yakubu Akwashiki, has called on Nigerians—especially voters in Nasarawa State—to reject politicians who exploit religion, ethnicity, and tribal sentiments for political advantage.
Akwashiki, who serves as Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts, made the appeal during the distribution of empowerment items valued at ₦70 million to his constituents in Lafia.
He warned that identity-driven politics continues to weaken Nigeria’s unity and hinder national development, describing it as a serious threat to social cohesion.
As part of his constituency programme, the lawmaker distributed four Sharon buses, 22 motorcycles, 60 grinding machines, and provided financial support for women and students. He noted that the initiative reflects his commitment to improving livelihoods and encouraging self-reliance among residents of the Lafia/Obi Federal Constituency.
Akwashiki further explained that his interventions also include borehole projects, rural electrification, job opportunities, educational support such as JAMB registrations, and healthcare assistance. He assured that more programmes are underway for those yet to benefit.
He urged voters to prioritize competence and integrity when choosing leaders, stressing the importance of moving away from divisive political practices.
The lawmaker also declared his intention to contest for the House of Representatives seat for Lafia/Obi in the 2027 elections under the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Danladi Jatau, commended Akwashiki for delivering meaningful democratic dividends to his constituents. He noted that despite party differences, lawmakers in the state continue to work together in the interest of good governance.
Jatau also praised the administration of Governor Abdullahi Sule, calling on Nigerians to embrace peace, unity, and cooperation regardless of political, ethnic, or religious differences.
Several stakeholders, including the SDP National Chairman Sadiq Abubakar Gombe, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo, and former Information Minister Labaran Maku, lauded Akwashiki for his contributions to community development. They encouraged Nigerians to support SDP candidates in the 2027 elections, describing his efforts as impactful and people-focused.
Jatau emphasized that effective leadership is rooted in service and appreciation for the people, urging citizens to shun politics based on ethnicity and religion.
